OUR COAST, OUR CANVAS

A ROOM THAT KEPT GROWING

There is something rather special that happens when you put creative materials on a table and simply invite people to have a go.

That was at the heart of Our Coast, Our Canvas, a two day community arts project at Sutton on Sea.

From the beginning, children and families came through the doors ready to draw, colour, paint and experiment with different materials. As the project developed, teenagers, adults and older visitors joined them.

Before long, the room wasn't simply filled with art. It was filled with conversation, laughter and people creating together.

People who had never met before found themselves sitting around the same tables, sharing materials, exchanging ideas and helping one another.

As more people arrived, additional tables were brought into the room so that everyone could have space to participate and enjoy their own creative experience.

Many people stayed for considerable periods, becoming absorbed in what they were making and in the conversations taking place around them.

Some families who joined us on the first day even returned on the second because their children wanted to create some more.

CREATING TOGETHER

Children, adults and different generations worked side by side, sharing ideas, materials and creativity.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

People who had never met before found themselves chatting, laughing and creating together around the same tables.

COMING BACK FOR MORE

Families returned for a second day, while the growing number of participants meant extra tables were brought in so everyone could join the creativity.

Community & Environmental Work

I am proud to be working alongside Happy Chappy Beach Buddy, a Chapel St Leonards charity focused on accessibility, beach and water safety, environmental responsibility and bringing communities together through education, creativity and kindness.

Together, we are developing projects that combine art, storytelling, environmental awareness and community involvement. Our Love Our Beach campaign has already brought together schools, families, volunteers and local organisations, with 111 local school children proudly becoming ambassadors for their beach.

Interest is continuing to grow, with other schools, including Hogsthorpe Primary School, looking at becoming involved.

Authors Day at Seaview Colonnade

Saturday 5 September, 10am to 4pm
Seaview Colonnade, Sutton on Sea

I’m delighted to be taking part in the first Authors Day at Seaview Colonnade this September.

The event will be held in the Shoreline Room, opposite Seven Districts Coffee Shop, and will bring together writers, books, poetry and plenty of literary creativity throughout the day.

I’ll be there with The Kitty Krew, including my books, artwork and a special look at the continuing world of The Kitty Krew in Wonderland.

.The Wonderland project is one of my biggest creative adventures yet, bringing together storytelling, illustration, Victorian inspiration, mystery, humour and, of course, Daisy, Monty and that little rascal Kylo.

Visitors will be able to discover more about the project, see some of the artwork and ideas behind it, and find out how the Kitty Krew have somehow managed to wander their way into Wonderland.

There will also be books available, Kitty Krew items, colouring activities and a few little extras to make the table fun for younger visitors too.

Authors Day is all about celebrating writing, creativity and the many different ways stories can be shared.

If you are in Sutton on Sea on Saturday 5 September, come along, say hello and have a look at what is taking shape in the world of The Kitty Krew in Wonderland.

A Story That Built Friendships

The greatest achievement of Living in a Box has never been the number of copies printed. It has been the friendships created through storytelling, bringing together readers, schools, libraries and communities in both England and Germany.
Every conversation, every shared story and every smiling child reminds me that books have the power to connect people, whatever their age or language.
