Meet Edmund Thibideau Victorian

Born in Victorian England during the great age of exploration, Edmund Thibideau
was fascinated by the world's unknown places. Inspired by the legendary journeys
of Dr David Livingstone, he dedicated his life to recording remarkable discoveries through the emerging art of photography.
Equipped with his faithful wooden camera, delicate glass plates and an adventurous spirit, Edmund ventured further than most explorers dared. His travels eventually led him beyond the maps of the known world and into the extraordinary realm of Wonderland.
There, he discovered a land filled with curious characters, impossible landscapes and magical creatures. Since that first expedition,
Edmund has devoted himself to documenting Wonderland's wonders for future generations.
His greatest quest remains the same
to capture the first authentic photograph of the elusive Cheshire Cat. Despite countless expeditions,
Victorian photography requires long exposures, and the Cheshire Cat always seems to vanish before the photograph is complete, leaving behind nothing but a mischievous smile.
Undeterred, Edmund continues to record every adventure in his journal, believing that one day patience, perseverance and a little Wonderland magic will finally reward him with the photograph he has spent a lifetime pursuing.
With his trusted camera, notebooks and an endless curiosity, he set out to discover places that few had ever imagined.
His travels eventually led him beyond the familiar world and into the extraordinary land of
Wonderland.
There he encountered curious characters, talking animals and magical landscapes unlike anything recorded before. Rather than collecting rare specimens, he chose to capture moments of kindness,
friendship and imagination through the lens of his camera.
Every photograph tells part of that remarkable journey, preserving stories that might otherwise have been lost to time.
Today, the Victorian Photographer continues his travels, sharing tales of adventure with visitors of all ages and inviting them to become part of the story. Whether meeting families at events, exploring new places or discovering hidden corners of Wonderland, he believes that every picture has a story waiting to be told.

The Hunt for the Cheshire Cat
Although the Victorian Photographer has travelled through many strange lands, one mystery has remained just beyond his reach
the elusive Cheshire Cat.
For years he has searched the forests, winding pathways and hidden corners of Wonderland, hoping to capture the first truly authentic photograph of the famous smiling cat. Yet every encounter ends the same way...
Just as the shutter clicks, the Cheshire Cat begins to fade, leaving behind nothing more than a mischievous grin suspended in the air.
Many believe the cat enjoys the game as much as the photographer does.
Undeterred, the Victorian Photographer continues his expedition, convinced that one day patience,
curiosity and a little Wonderland magic will reward him with the greatest photograph never before seen.
The Gift of the Camera
A remarkable gift that changed Edmund's expeditions forever.
For many years, Edmund Thibideau travelled with a large Victorian camera, heavy glass plates and cumbersome equipment.
Every expedition demanded patience, careful preparation and no small amount of determination.
During one remarkable journey, after helping a mysterious traveller who seemed to know far more about Wonderland than anyone else, Edmund received an unexpected gift.
It was a Kodak folding camera
a remarkable invention of its time, lighter to carry and far better suited to long expeditions. To Edmund, it represented a new chapter in his adventures.
"This camera will make your travels easier," the stranger said. "But even the finest camera cannot persuade the Cheshire Cat to remain still."
From that day forward, the Kodak became Edmund's trusted companion. It travelled with him through forests, across beaches, into Tower Gardens and beyond the hidden gateway to Wonderland.
Although the camera made his journeys easier, one thing never changed.
The Cheshire Cat still disappeared before the photograph was complete.

The Curious Difficulty of Photographing Wonderland
Today's expedition has once again proved that Wonderland is a most troublesome place for a Victorian photographer.
My camera, though beautifully crafted, requires patience. The brass lens must be carefully focused, the glass plate prepared, the tripod steadied and, most importantly of all... the subject must remain perfectly still.
This presents no difficulty in England.
In Wonderland, however, it is quite another matter.
The White Rabbit never stops long enough to catch his breath, let alone have his portrait taken. The Mad Hatter refuses to sit in the same chair twice, and the March Hare insists on moving just as I remove the lens cap.
As for the Cheshire Cat... he is undoubtedly the greatest challenge of them all.
On three occasions I have found him sitting most obligingly upon a branch, smiling as though ready for his portrait. Yet, by the time the exposure is complete, only the smile remains. I have, therefore, accumulated an extraordinary collection of photographs containing nothing whatsoever... except a suspicious grin floating in empty air.
I remain convinced that the Cheshire Cat understands perfectly well how long Victorian photography takes, and I strongly suspect he is enjoying the joke.
Nevertheless, every explorer knows that perseverance is as important as courage.
Tomorrow, I shall try again.
